End of the World

Posted on Sunday, September 20th, 2015 at 4:38 am

The world is ending on September 28th, an asteroid crashing on Earth, ending life everywhere on the planet.  It happens to coincide with a lunar eclipse and blood moon.  To celebrate the event, we’re having a party.

.

The name Why Day comes from Skeeter Davis’ hit The End of the World (1962), where most of the lines in the lyrics began with the word why.  (Skeeter passed away in 2004, so it will be a long party.)

Alpha

Posted on Wednesday, February 18th, 2015 at 3:54 pm

Well, Alpha and Myka are getting a chance to sniff each other out through the screen door.  So tensions are on the wane from a tense meeting the other night.  Myka gets the yard in the morning, dogs in the afternoon.  And the door is open in the afternoon when it warms enough.

.

So Myka is hopefully going to learn to deal with the new dog, and she can be out full time during the day again.  I don’t need all that daytime maintenance.  After dark is more than enough.

*nom nom nom nom*  Coconut pudding with whipped cream (the pie hasn’t been cut yet, eating the leftover ingredients first).  Can’t buy this stuff in a store.  Pizza too, though it was split into a double semicircle, as the crust was wider than the oven.  So it has been a celebration of Π today, though a complete circumference has not been seen yet (at least in digestible form).  Π are round!

.

Got the hood latches on, same style hasp latch as seen on hand held tool boxes.  They are on the front edge of the hood, not to be seen from the drivers seat.  The locks are paper rings (think loose leaf).  Wondering if it will pass inspection.  But it holds the hood very well.

.

I have the weekend off.  It will be in the 60’s in the afternoons.

.

Myka is not concerned with any of this.

A parting of wallets

Posted on Wednesday, December 24th, 2014 at 5:37 pm

Yesterday, the wallet I ordered from Amazon arrived, and it now resides in my pocket.  The old wallet has been retired, for obvious reasons.

.

This is my third traveler’s wallet.  The first I acquired in the mid 70’s from a craft shop in Colorado.  It was definitely a hippy wallet.  The second (the tattered one shown below) was a Christmas present in the early 90’s.  Now my third one.  May it last twenty years, like its predecessors.

Can you see the gears turning in Myka’s eyes?  (She is grounded and trying to make me pay for it.  I gave her a quick outdoor preview, and she abused it by escaping to the front yard and into the street, ignoring my calls to her.  Brat!)

Adrift

Posted on Sunday, October 12th, 2014 at 10:06 am

In my third week of house sitting, first in Austin, now in Bryan.  I spent ten days in south Austin caring for Pinot and Grigio (see below), a pair of very young rescued kittens, along with the tootoo girls.  Four bottle feedings a day…

.

Now I’m in Bryan, caring for the parrots and China Mae and Blackie (aging dogs), in the midst of rainy weather with cooling temperatures.  Fall is finally here.

.

Been downloading gigs, fattening the need to burn backups.  I will need to buy a new spindle of DVD blanks.  Fortunately, I have the funds.

.

I can only wonder how Myka is doing.  She gets spayed shortly after I get back to Brenham, which is Friday.  Then I get to go back on meds.  I wonder if construction is happening at the house in my absence, as stated.

Got the WIFI Extender locally today, will set it up in a bit. That’s the last of the major expenditures for the time being. Myka got her follow up booster shots yesterday. Next month’s major expenses are less than $400, which includes the spaying (postponed), a lot cheaper than September has been.

Viral

Posted on Monday, August 11th, 2014 at 5:48 pm

I am sometimes awed at viral  waves across the internet.  Then again, sometimes they demonstrate just how few of us are truly educated or anywhere near it.

.

Case in point, on August 5th, a GIF was released by @cjzero (CJ Fogler), his handle layered on the print frames.  The sequence showed a young woman at an Arizona Diamondbacks game, talking to her boyfriend and showing a marked reaction.  CJ claimed that he had no idea what was going on with her.  If you can’t find it, then you don’t understand viral and meme.  If you find it once, photo search it on Google images to see how it’s spread.  I don’t blame anyone for not trying.

.

For anyone who has witnessed a seizure in progress, the symptoms are unmistakable, face, neck, left arm.  About six or seven out of some four hundred replies that I saw  recognized it and made note.  But they were largely ignored, with most of the comments relating to vibrating panties, flatulence, diarrhea (usually misspelled), turn on/turn off instant switch, cleavage in the background, and all sorts of argument and sexist innuendos, few displaying even the slightest level of intelligence.

.

Sometimes, I do worry.  Then again, it keeps them out of trouble, hopefully, for a short while.

Myka 1930’s Painting

Cut my hair today.  Not bad for a single mirror and a laptop camera.  The Wiss scissors did an excellent job.

Got a good deal on the Repix master upgrade on the iPad.  I like the brushes.  For the price, a hard one to resist.  (Shot in PhotoBooth, using light tunnel, then finished off heavily in Repix, trying out a bunch of the new stuff.)

Smiling Chilies

Posted on Friday, June 27th, 2014 at 11:19 pm

Hot tamale, hot hot tamale, hot tamale, hot hot!

.

Weebl’s Tamale is an old looping Flash toon that has always tickled my absurd side.  I especially enjoy the dancing chili peppers.  I grabbed the SWF file and decompiled the chili shapes, exporting them to SVG.  In illustrator, I exported them to PNG, which I opened in Photoshop and assembled in a new PSD.  I merged the layers, discarded the background, and saved as a PNG with transparent background.  Here they are.

Hot hot!

Laundry day

Posted on Monday, June 23rd, 2014 at 12:48 pm

Laundry day. Double load (4 washer loads). I bought a bunch of new clothes on Thursday (with part of the check I mobile deposited), and I’m finally getting around to laundry. The reasons for the delay are many. But there are two loads of new clothes (wash out the store stuff) and two loads of old clothes (just plain old dirty). So I’ll have lots and lots of clothes and will be able to procrastinate indefinitely when it comes to doing laundry.

Back online, sort of….

Posted on Monday, June 16th, 2014 at 7:24 pm

Internet has been an issue for the last ten days.  Fortunately, today it took a turn for the better, if only slightly.  The good news is that I can  get online most of the day, which is much improved from the couple of hours a night wifi connection.

.

But this morning, I helped dismantle the front of the greenhouse that got smashed by the fallen soapberry trees.  (Photo in the end of May entry.)  This opened the path of transmission a fair bit, quadrupling the open profile between houses.  But still, the new modem/wifi is too weak.  A switch to a different carrier is in the making.  So I wait and do as I can with a slow service.  And I can always move closer in the yard if I need speed.

.

Paid storage rent today.    Not broke, but not high rolling either.  Hope to see a check soon to try the iPad app for the bank (photo transfer deposit).  Bank is thin on funds, though.  Other sources holding.

.

The picarita (still no name) is getting settled in.  She uses the new cat box faithfully.  She is getting used to Annie, who is behaving her manners.  There are many conflicts going on inside her canine brain, but she’s sincerely trying.

Late Frozen Rain

Posted on Tuesday, March 4th, 2014 at 11:59 am

Well, it was looking like spring.  Then we get a night in the mid 20’s and frozen rain along with it.  Everything is drooping badly.  And outside, as it climbs above freezing, is the sound of dropping ice.

Ol’ OneEye

Posted on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at 6:35 am

I am getting very tired of what seems to be the new trend in self-portraits via smart phone cameras.  I’ve put up with the extended arm or reverse text on T-shirts of photos in the mirror, even the camera in the mirror shot (barely).  But the one thing that I am getting tired of seeing is the tendency toward portraits with only one eye in the frame.  I’m not talking about hair covering one eye or a side shot.  It’s only part of the head being in the frame, revealing only one eye.  And while I’m fussing, the 45° from vertical trend is another artsy idea don’t fly with me.  I’m sorry, but bad photography is bad photography, no matter how chic or cool it is to those who practice it.

.

Here is a list of bad photography trends in the hip new digital phone age:

Bad lighting, no one understand how important good lighting is or even what it is.

45° angle framing, monkey see, monkey do, how cool!

One eye, like wow, how cool is that?

Cutting off the head at the eyebrows.  Phone cameras are dumb bait.

Holding the camera in the mirror.  Text on shirts backwards.  Duh!

Trashy filters, as if they are masters of image modification.

Piercings and tatoos, such conformists, boring!  Wait until they’re 50.

Shooting the bird, so original, like they understand what being bad is.  Posers!  Yawn.

Making faces.  They obviously are not comfortable with their faces, so they have to distort it to be photographed.

Pathetic expressions. Digital is cheap, shoot another.  Never learn how pick out a good image.

Bad focus.  No one even looks to see if something is in focus or not, just shoot!

.

Example of both 45° and one eye.  Looks like an accidental exposure.
