One more

Posted on Saturday, June 29th, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Okay, this is the last one for now.  A classic vase design with a stone shader from Photoshop.  By the way, the cracks came from lightning brushes.  As always in this series, everything from scratch.

Started playing with maps in Photoshop.  This one has diffusion, specularity, and bump maps.  I wouldn’t mind having a set of these.  In modo, of course.

Had a very hard time getting Poser Pro’s shaded preview mode to work with OpenGL on the MacBook.  Also had to correct texture assignments on Shuttlestar.  Was not much fun, but I finally got this memory hog into modo for a quick render.

One more, this one a rough surface that has withstood the erosion of time.  Again, purely from scratch.

More pottery

Another item from the virtual pottery wheel.  Vase?  Bowl?  Not sure what to call it.  Again, everything from scratch.

Got to playing with a 3D sim on the iPad which makes virtual pottery.  I came away with the impression that I can make better in modo.  Not a new thing, lathing a curve, but it gave me a little insight into basic shapes found on a potters wheel.  Everything is from scratch.

The gallery is back in its old place in a new software.  I took out the duplicate B&W photo section that is already on the photo page, and I’m adding digital photo FX, the art of butchering perfectly good photos and making something honestly eye-catching.  It’s not as easy as it might seem with today’s standalone photo filter packets.  It will grow as I gather the victims, and as I make them.  Don’t click on the 404 button.

This afternoon was a day of waltzing with databases.  Started out by finding that my gallery went belly up because of server upgrades.  And upgrade didn’t work either, so I switched to Coppermine.  I had it part f the way there when I had to install a WordPress for Vince.  Code and Photoshop…..

I need to upload my images.  I did a lot of housecleaning under the hood today at

It was also a day of hit and miss air conditioning.  The central unit fan has burnt bearings and stops when it gets hot.

Went to grab new stuff from ShareCG this morning.  Found this (W40K), rendered in modo 7.

Summer haircut

Posted on Friday, June 21st, 2013 at 9:13 pm

It was summer solstice today, and I got my hair cut for summer.  (A bit late, but hey…. it’s been one of those years.)

I got a barber to do the honors this year.

Austin living

Posted on Tuesday, June 18th, 2013 at 6:57 am

It’s been many years since I spent the night within Austin city limits.  I have spent many, many nights near Austin, but not actually inside.  Well, I’m back.  Staying with Steve and Renita on the northeast side of town.

Rain is threatening this morning.  I have errands to run.  But the errands are not particularly time sensitive.  So I can sit out the precipitation.  The weather has reached summer strength, meaning upper 90’s in the afternoon.  Ugh, what a time to come unstuck…

Played music for a couple of hours on Sunday night with Renita.  That led to a very short sleep, but I made up for that last night.  Things are going well here.

I need to take care of the front driver’s tire on the pickup.  It has a slow leak, and I need to find the leak and plug it if I can.  It loses 10 pounds a day, so it permits a certain amount of slack.  But I need to get after it.

It has been an interesting weekend here at Lyse’s. Friday night saw my debut at Quoffer’s. Sharon was most unfair…. Also heard Patty Finney at the town square gazebo Saturday noon. I got to sing along. Back among the land of the living. It feels good. And Lyse has been fun.
But it’s time to move on. Enjoyed the stay.

Sprung free

Posted on Thursday, June 13th, 2013 at 11:12 pm

Well, I’m no longer a Webbervillan. I am currently a resident of the highway. I’m presently staying in Lyse’s upstairs bedroom, on my back in bed, typing on my iPad with my stylus. Something different…
It feels good to be free of the ties of the last year. It was definitely a year worth forgetting. I’m not saying that nothing good came of it, as I can think of some truly classic events during that period. But overall, it stank.
It also feels good to be done with the physical chores of moving. My body has had enough stress for the time being. It feels wonderful not to have to think about physical labor for a while.
I am looking forward to doing some camping in the days ahead. I want to see the Gulf, as it has been awhile since I felt saltwater between my toes. And I want to do some natural freshwater swimming/wading as well. Sitting in a cool clearwater stream, the current massaging my body. Sounds good to me. But for tomorrow, I think I will settle for Stephen and Franci’s pool.
Lots of uncertainties, but lots of possibilities too. I have several welcoming places where I can stay. It feels so good to be around friendly faces again, among those who know me for who I really am. It is indeed time to move on and put the last phase of my life behind me.

Closer to departure from the former Bottomland

Posted on Monday, June 10th, 2013 at 5:49 pm

Moved a lot of heavy stuff today, books, photos and proofs, old yet working computers, and a lot of indoor storage items, basically the contents of the storage room/office that Spidey the Siamese used to occupy.  Was hot work at the storage units, but I got it done.

I still have the bathroom, my room, and the pantry to go (pantry is metal cabinet and washing machine and a few items of food like peanut butter.)   Another day of hauling stuff, and then departure day, which looks to be Wednesday the 12th, when I leave with my travel items.  (Clothes, Macs, instruments, meds, etc)  I will probably return the trailer to Lyse tomorrow.

I’m ready to be out of here.  It will be so nice to be around friendly people again.

I must say that one incident that rendered the water system useless and required a call to a plumber to repair it made my day.  The thought of the old saying “Pride goes before the fall” has made me chuckle more than once.  I know it’s not graceful of me, but I found it quite satisfying to think of the bill for the house call.

Heart of Saturday Night

Posted on Sunday, June 9th, 2013 at 9:25 pm

Went to see Doug up at the compound yesterday, having just finished emptying the barn of my worldly goods stored there and taking them to storage.  We ended up at Sharon and Andre’s, ate dinner, and played music. Fun night, one much needed.  Got to play Tom Waits’ The Heart of Saturday Night for the first time with others.

Stephen and Franci had a rough passage through the middle Gulf, due an area of disturbed weather that dropped a lot of rain and blew up some bouncy seas.  They avoided a straight run to port and ended up in the worst of it.  They are now pulling into port in Mobile Bay after sunset.  Makes me glad to be on dry ground.

Today was a day of rest, getting ready for the last push, inside the house.

Posted on Friday, June 7th, 2013 at 5:51 pm

Gathered up the last of the things in the barn for staging.  But I ran out of steam, and getting them on the trailer was a no-go.  Just couldn’t find the energy, not even for a store run.  Then again, it was a busy morning gathering, finding things that needed finding.  Tomorrow morning will see the migration, and I can start on the house, which is considerably less.

Less than a week away from vacating.

Blood pressure

Posted on Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 at 9:21 am

Wrestled with my appliances yesterday, getting them into storage by myself.  My blood pressure hasn’t been normal since.  Medication is helping, despite the elevated readings. I hate to think what it would be without it, because it is high enough with it to alarm doctors and nurses.  Man, this is getting old.

Back in my late teens and early twenties, when I was a snail mail writer, filling several pages with my usual scrawl, I had smilies of my own.  The typical evil grin for me is this, albeit a bit smaller.
