WIFI adjustment

Posted on Sunday, June 29th, 2014 at 8:32 pm

I made a few adjustments to objects that were positioned between me and the wifi unit, and it makes a big difference.  Mind, it’s not full speed, but it stays above threshold full time, or 99% of it.  So I’m not kept offline for a large part of the day like I was.

.

It was a warm muggy day today, and the low tonight is around 80°F with a high dew point.  So I removed the plastic covering and cranked up the AC.  It’s not super cold, but at least it cools the middle room, with aid of fans to move cooled air, to where I can sleep without sweating.  I am still in the kitchen with the laptop, where it’s still rather warm.  But I can take the heat, as wifi is better in the kitchen.

.

So that’s two things that makes my life much more endurable.

Pink eye remedy

Posted on Saturday, June 28th, 2014 at 5:57 pm

I hereby personally attest that the first attempt at curing pinkeye (pink watering eye, no yellow or green pus, viral infection most likely) in a cat should be using virgin coconut oil (expeller pressed preferred). Smear it with a sterile q-tip around the edge of the eye, letting it go onto the surface of the eye so that it gets up under the lid with blinking.  If it’s cold enough to be a gooey solid (below 76°F), the cat’s body heat will quickly melt it.  Repeat 24 hours later.  Results should be total within 48 hours.  Watering should stop shortly after the second treatment, if not before.

.

The oil doesn’t adversely affect the eye, no stinging, no irritation.  The eye may swell slightly after the first dose as things are dislodged, but that will be gone shortly after the second dose.  The cat will naturally try to clean the eye, and the oil makes it easy for the cat to remove the secretions. But the cat should be discouraged from washing the eye for at least ten minutes, giving the oil a chance to spread to all infected areas.

.

By the third day, it will be impossible to tell the cat ever had pink eye.  It’s clean, painless, odorless (well, a slight smell of coconut), and easy.  It’s the best first stage treatment I’ve seen for pinkeye.  If the pinkeye persists, the apple cider vinegar treatment (1:1 with filtered water applied on the nape of the neck) is a second option, but odds are, if the coconut oil doesn’t work, the vinegar won’t either.  If it persists, see a vet, as it might be a serious condition.

Smiling Chilies

Hot tamale, hot hot tamale, hot tamale, hot hot!

.

Weebl’s Tamale is an old looping Flash toon that has always tickled my absurd side.  I especially enjoy the dancing chili peppers.  I grabbed the SWF file and decompiled the chili shapes, exporting them to SVG.  In illustrator, I exported them to PNG, which I opened in Photoshop and assembled in a new PSD.  I merged the layers, discarded the background, and saved as a PNG with transparent background.  Here they are.

Hot hot!

Laundry day

Posted on Monday, June 23rd, 2014 at 12:48 pm

Laundry day. Double load (4 washer loads). I bought a bunch of new clothes on Thursday (with part of the check I mobile deposited), and I’m finally getting around to laundry. The reasons for the delay are many. But there are two loads of new clothes (wash out the store stuff) and two loads of old clothes (just plain old dirty). So I’ll have lots and lots of clothes and will be able to procrastinate indefinitely when it comes to doing laundry.

The slow days

Posted on Saturday, June 21st, 2014 at 8:52 pm

I don’t usually talk about the slow days, days where nothing gets done because I don’t have the energy.  Now I can waste a day as well as anyone I know, but this is not just run of the mill laziness.  This is a fatigue, not severe enough to stop me from doing daily routines, but still very limiting.  If I make a run to the store, it’s generally in a small time window where I feel up to it.  And then I have to rest for an hour or two.  An overnight outing like Bryan comes along maybe once a month.  I’ve missed four or five of them because I just wasn’t up for it.  I can feed myself, do all that sort of daily stuff on most days.  But more than that can be a challenge.

.

Part of it is the weight.  It’s not easy on the frame, back, hips, knees, respiratory.  It takes more energy to move.  And that raises the level of energy needed.  It’s contributory, not the primary reason.  It’s something else, an imbalance.  Nothing particularly hurts, nothing is calling for attention, but it’s not smooth, like an engine running too lean.  Diastolic has been running high since the water weight gain.  And that alone isn’t it.  It’s a number of things all tied together, and no easy answer.

.

Fortunately, I am as adept at amusing myself on slow days as I am on the intense ones, as long as the internet works…..

New duds

Posted on Friday, June 20th, 2014 at 10:29 pm

Got new clothes today.  Not that they look much different than what I’m wearing thin now. Didn’t get to do laundry today.  Either wait until Monday or use the laundromat.  I have enough to make it till Monday.

.

Obviously, the iPad deposit worked.  Great way to deposit checks.

Myka

Posted on Tuesday, June 17th, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Make it official, the kitten’s name is Myka (mee kah),  as in Myka Picarita (mee’ kah pee” cah ree’ tah), aka Myka Rascalette.

.

One more chore out of the way.

Back online, sort of….

Posted on Monday, June 16th, 2014 at 7:24 pm

Internet has been an issue for the last ten days.  Fortunately, today it took a turn for the better, if only slightly.  The good news is that I can  get online most of the day, which is much improved from the couple of hours a night wifi connection.

.

But this morning, I helped dismantle the front of the greenhouse that got smashed by the fallen soapberry trees.  (Photo in the end of May entry.)  This opened the path of transmission a fair bit, quadrupling the open profile between houses.  But still, the new modem/wifi is too weak.  A switch to a different carrier is in the making.  So I wait and do as I can with a slow service.  And I can always move closer in the yard if I need speed.

.

Paid storage rent today.    Not broke, but not high rolling either.  Hope to see a check soon to try the iPad app for the bank (photo transfer deposit).  Bank is thin on funds, though.  Other sources holding.

.

The picarita (still no name) is getting settled in.  She uses the new cat box faithfully.  She is getting used to Annie, who is behaving her manners.  There are many conflicts going on inside her canine brain, but she’s sincerely trying.

Some of the stuff I did while the net was down.

Back in Brenham with the kitten.  Bryan was much needed and a great 4 hour jam session.  Jesse, George, Catherine, Steve, Pete, Will, Tina, plus others, and of course Doug and Ellen.  Had a wonderful time, and I found a new Cool Gear drinking bottle.  (Only one, I was hoping for four, but one will suffice for now.)

.

Almost have the fleas under control on the kitten.  The Dawn bath got most, and now I’m ambushing individuals that hid on the head during the bath with moonshine.  I’m being sure to get only in areas not accessible to her tongue, which slows the process, but it’s working.  Only a very few left.  Otherwise, the kitten is doing fine.  Even Annie is settling down and starting to accept her.  She even lies on her back in my lap/hands already.

.

It was too hot last night to get to sleep before 3:30 AM.  I wish that I could open some windows or that the AC worked.  (It does, but it needs season prepping.)  It takes a long time to cool the house with fans.  I need a nap.  Three and a half hours won’t cut it.

.

Almost caught up on downloading.  The net is still a bit iffy, but it’s moving enough to get the downloads finished.

Internet funk

Posted on Wednesday, June 11th, 2014 at 7:55 am

The net has been very fitful, then gone for a few days, no password for the new modem.  After several days absent, it returned last night and held until a few minutes ago.  Now it’s back to problematic.

.

Off to Bryan today.  Bank deposit, music school, a little shopping.

.

Kitten dropped in my lap yesterday.  As if I needed the trouble.

Summer

Posted on Thursday, June 5th, 2014 at 9:54 pm

Summer is finally here.  Ugh!  90’s without A/C.  Oh well, I can wash my hair daily in cold water with no discomfort.

.

LazyBoy slipped a dowel.  I may sleep in the truck tonight, maybe in the little LazyBoy.  It is fixable, will just require coordination and schedule.

.

Internet has been a pain today…..  what else is new?

.

modo 8.0.1 SP1 was released this week.  Fixed some bugs.  I’m happy.

.

The Meenie is being tamed.  Added Cribbage and Canasta to the iPad to keep Pinochle company.  Staying busy mentally, if nothing else.
