Austin

Posted on Sunday, January 24th, 2016 at 1:59 am

Finished my first full day in Austin.  Unpacked the essentials, set up the office, did laundry, got my sleep, played with the guys, watched a little TV, ate, and generally got oriented.  Alicia and Eric made it okay.

.

I was tempted to go get takeout, but I decided to stay in.  Saturday can be rough on the streets.

Burf!

New neighbors in the rental next door.  They have a large dog, and it barks and whines at night.  Good thing that I am heading to Austin Friday.  Maybe it will have settled down by the time I get back.

Here is a photo (albeit blurry from motion) of Myka shoe diving after a brushing.  Crazy cat.

Settled

Had a bit of a rough day, after two days of sustained effort to copy the drives.  The effort left me a little on the peaked side.  It wasn’t strenuous, but I’m not completely over the flu either.  And falling asleep without covers or layers, while a cool front blew through, didn’t help either.  This is one of those 21 day varieties.  I measured a 98.5°F temp this afternoon, as close to nailing it as I’ve seen in weeks.  But it’s still not nailing it.

.

However, I have all my current production tools and content on a single hard drive, something I haven’t seen in years.  Feels assuring that all those third class files that were never burned to disk now have at least one backup copy.  And the important ones have three or four instances.

.

Now this doesn’t count all the files that exist on burned disks, but those are either outdated or soon to have yet another drive (such as media).  It will probably be a 3Tb, and it shouldn’t exceed 1.5Tb, 2Tb at the very outside estimate.  But I’m in no hurry for that.  The backup was higher on the priority list.  It is ready for Carbon Copy Cloner to keep the backup current.

.

My next backup chore will be to burn more DVDs.

.

One week until I’m in Austin.  I sure hope I’m well by then.  I’m tired of this garbage I’m toting.

Backup buzzy

Bought a 4Tb external drive yesterday for backup.  It does two things, it makes it easier to recover lost hard drive data without the pain of digging through the backup DVDs/CDs, and it adds a layer of backup to things that weren’t important enough to burn.

.

This is not to say that all the things I burned to DVD to get the stuff off the drive are backed up, but I do have hard copies in case I need them.  I am considering one more drive for media, but I’m not in a big hurry for that.

.

For now, there will be shuffling stuff between drives and folders before backup, so that I’m not erasing a bunch of files from the new drive in order to keep fragmenting down.  I think the computer house cleaning will take three days, maybe more when considering sorting catch all folders.  One gig a minute seems big until you start talking terabytes.

Grunge, grunge, and more grunge

This stupid viral bug will not go away, though the symptoms have shifted.  The sore throat is history.  The nasal passages still clog, but they don’t run much any more.  The trachea is the biggest issue now.  It is irritated, and there is a lot of wheezing and rattling, but the coughing has subsided, thanks to the expectorant.

.

I got some ephedrine yesterday (requires an ID swipe now), and that is helping to relieve the inflammation of the trachea and bronchials.  It is acting a great deal like asthma.  I only use it when the inflammation gets intense, as the dinginess is not my favorite side effect.  Coughing is down considerably, thanks to the 12 hour tablet expectorant.  So I’m off the cough syrup (yuck!).  I am monitoring the lungs with my stethoscope, and they are clean, thank goodness.  No pneumonia to worry bout.  And my blood pressure is holding up pretty well to the medication.

.

Looks like I’ll be applying for medicade later in the month, as soon as my case renewal goes through.  It looks like I will escape needing it for this grunge.

.

Enjoying old movies that are favorites, keeping my spirits up.  I can still power sing and laugh, so it can’t be all that bad, despite how it feels.  I look forward to being well again.  It’s just a matter of time.  Blech!

Not the best way to start the new year

Solstice party in Bryan was the highlight of the holiday season.  It was a great party, lots of music, lots of smiles.  Wagon Wheel had the best chorus I can remember.  It was a great and satisfying party.  I also caught the flu there. (I think.)

.

December was a fun month, and it wore me out.  But it was an all around good time until the 28th, when I broke my final remaining posted crown.  It was a deep fracture, and I had to tear out a chunk of gum with it to et it out.  It was starting to heal when my throat went sore late on the 30th, and it’s been downhill since.  Fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, bronchial settling, with a wheeze and a ragged cough.  Miserable stuff, into the 5th day.  I’m doing my best to be positive, but….

.

But December will be remembered as a good month, despite the numb sections and the way it ended.
