Eye surgery

I had my appointment with the ophthalmologist yesterday, Julie driving me, which was advantageous.  I was expecting a five minute introductory visit, but that notion vanished quickly once I was in the exam room.

.

I was given a top to bottom, front to back eye and vision exam by the nurse.  While I was made aware of the deficits of my current vision state, I was not given a prescription for glasses.  Everything was logged in the computer, and when the ophthalmologist finally arrived, he looked at the figures, then my eye, then ran a couple more eye examinations.  After seven or eight minutes in the room, he asked, “Do you want the growth removed today?”  I paused about 1.6 minutes, thinking of Julie, who wasn’t expecting this long of a wait either, and said “Yeah.”

.

So after waiting a few minutes while he took care of another patient, the surgery got underway.  Prep took a couple of minutes.  Anesthetic was local only and it wasn’t entirely effective, especially toward the back, which was last to be severed.  And the growth had been there long enough to develop its own vascular system.  So much of the surgery time was dedicated to stemming the flow of blood.

.

In the end, after a lot of patience and stoicism, the surgery was completed, the growth placed in a specimen bottle for a biopsy, and me pressing a gauze to the wound to stop the final light bleeding.  After a quick visit, the homeward journey was made, and I came up with the song lyric, “I left a piece of myself in Bryan today.”  Never mind that it was technically in College Station, but the rhythm is all wrong.

.

So I’m at home, healing nicely.  The trauma and ordeals from the last couple of days are behind me after a nice solid sleep.  Time to get ready for slice and dice #3, oral  And because of the all in one visit event yesterday, it will be sooner rather than later.  That suits me, because the clutch repair and social engagements in December bumped its spot on the schedule.  I need to consult insurance about confusing statements that I’ve received in the last couple of months.  But that is the final barrier to beginning the end of my butchery.

Two down, one to go.
