Wrapping up exile

Posted on Tuesday, October 30th, 2018 at 8:12 am

I’ll be heading home with Myka on Thursday.  Today is the last day here without chores.  Packing starts tomorrow, though there isn’t a whole lot of stuff to pack.  Most everything is in boxes already.

Off to storage today to grab a few things.  It won’t take long.

Been running a few tests on the truck, looking to clean, polish, and wax it before TRD.  I think I have it down as what to use for which function.

1) Strip years of dirt and funk.  Purple Power.

2) Rub out the oxidized paint.  Rubbing compound.

3) Wax it to retain the shine.  A spray wax for starters, a solid wax later.

I also have a spray on rust converter for the few places it need it.

I have decided on fajita turkey for TRD, made beforehand and packed in an aluminum pan to be oven warmed.  It’s due an unveiling.

Played a little music yesterday at Sharon and Andre’s for dinner.  It was fun.

Pretty much settled back in at Grandma’s.  Found a couple of my water bottles (blue) at Walmart yesterday, added them to my collection.  I think I have enough now.  Maybe.  Depends on how long I live.

Settled back in, dealing with connection again, but not critical yet.  Can’t complain.  Myka is happy, going in and out as she pleases during daylight.  It’s keeping her busy.

Not much going on today.  I finished up the base editing of the recorded tracks before sunrise this morning.  (Normalize, equalize, echo, reverb to soften the small room bounce.)  I need to give each a critical ear and decide whether to post them or not.

Today is supposed to be the last day of rain for a while.  Lake Travis continues to drop slowly from its near record rise (4th highest, within 1 foot of the record).

Today is departure day.  Myka will have my company this evening.  Eric and Alicia depart Phoenix in about an hour.  I head to the airport in about three and a a half hours.   I will be packing in the meantime.

It’s been a quiet stay, the rain keeping me close to the vest.  I did get to record, so it was worthwhile.  And I got to spend time with the horde.  There were a couple of errands I didn’t do and a couple of intended places where I didn’t eat.  I’ll survive.  It was a cheap stay, so I can’t complain.

Ten days in Grandma’s and I should be heading home.  (Knock on wood.)

Wrapping up Austin

Posted on Friday, October 19th, 2018 at 6:31 pm

Two more days in Austin.  Wrapping things up.  I didn’t unpack much, so packing will be considerably easier than loading the truck.  Kitchen will wind up properly.

24 tunes recorded thus far.  Not sure how any more I’ll do here.  Plenty of editing (equalizing, etc.) to come, so I’m not in a big hurry to add to it.  I’ll be able to record more when I get home.  But it’s a good start.

Still wet.  No flooding, but enough to keep me off the streets.  Lake Travis is 23.25 feet above stage.  I’ve never known the water level to be that high.

Ten tracks on the hard drive thus far.  Third day of recording.

Lake Travis is up 17 feet above stage.  It has risen 39 feet in nine days.  It’s pretty wet, though not flooding here.

Myka is doing well at Grandma’s.  The pack here isn’t suffering either.

Eating well.  No real take out yet.  Mostly stuff from the freezer.

Life is good.

Settled in Austin, two days since rolling in.  Shopped for food, did a take out, pretty much got everything squared away.  No need to go anywhere in the immediate future.

Rain may curtail my runs out to see Myka.  It looks like the rest of the month may be rainy.  I’ll see how it plays.

Not much to add.  Pretty quiet passing the time thus far.

Another packing day today, getting ready for the shift to Austin.  Myka will be staying in Grandma’s, and I’ll visit her a few times.  She’ll do better better here than in Austin, not to mention two fewer trips.

Rainy weather overall, and today is forecast to be a wet one.  First real cold front moving through, yeilding sunny skies tomorrow, with a 10 to 15°F drop.  Lows projected in the upper 50’s.  Glad I brought warm clothes.

Got the truck washed, though there is still more to do.  But it shows a marked improvement.  I got various cleaners for the second round, interior and exterior, as well as rust treatment and a spray wax.  (Not going to do a full wax, not worth the effort.)  Now that the heat has abated, I can spend some time getting it looking a bit better.

Life has been good in exile thus far.  Miss my internet, but it’s not for that long.  Stephen’s seafood gumbo was superb.  Can’t complain.

The hush

Posted on Thursday, October 4th, 2018 at 12:45 am

We had a jam session tonight at Cheryl’s.  Was a many talented, many styled group.  There was plenty of chaos between songs, as we didn’t spend a lot of time talking at first.  I started playing If I Could Only Fly, and the chaos was all around through the first verse, until I got into the chorus.  One measure was chaos, the next was nothing but me, it was a deep silence of group recognition, very sudden.  Unusual to be singing through the conversations and then suddenly being the focus of everyone.  Probably the single most impressive moment of the evening for me.  It was a lovely evening.  The music was great.

Laundry tomorrow, as I have the place to myself in the am.  Still a few things to get done, but not many.

The Good Life

Settled in.  Have had two wonderful dinners in the 39 hours since I arrived.  Myka has been outside, and while not overly enthusiastic about it, she is having a good time.  So all is good since the arrival.  My body is starting to recover from the transition, aided by occasional ibuprofen.

The internet is usable, though a bit slow without the booster, unless I’m on the porch.  I’ll probably set it up today.  Haven’t particularly missed the speed yet.

Not complaining.  Exile is good.

Less than four hours to scheduled departure.  Most things are packed and staged, and the loading begins soon.  I’m well within margin, but departure time isn’t that hard set.  Only the last minute stuff hasn’t been packed.

Myka is bugging me to feed her.  I wish I could, but…   All she gets is calming treats in three hours.

I’ll be glad when I get to Elgin and everything is unloaded.  I am tired.  It’s been a long week, and my body hasn’t been all that perky.  I’m glad I’m packing fairly light.  Myka will be glad too, when we get there.  She’ll get to eat well when we arrive.  Not looking forward to her misery in transit.
