Pretty pictures (most of the time)

  • Railing Everywhere

A work in progress, a ready scene for a full length portraiture.  The figure will fill the slot on the right between the sun and the curtain.  Background in Artmatic Voyager.  Assembly and rendering in modo.

    .

A small version of my newest desktop.  Well, close to it.  I made a few minor changes in the final.  The sky bike is mine, from a couple of years ago.  I like the reflections on the body.

  • Tube

The texture needs to be higher res, but I like it.  I’ll have to render the texture larger (ArtMatic) and give it a second run in a desktop size.

  • Avatar

I have noticed the recent rash of Avatar models and morphs appearing online in the last month, pretty much to be expected with the appropriate creation lag (reference searching, study, modeling, texturing, etc).  Some are better than others.

    .

This one is not so bad, though I would have liked to see a slightly higher resolution in the mesh in places.  The specular can show the facet angles, so a little subdivision in the model and in the rendering, along with specular reduction, made for better results.  I also needed to remove some stray parts that exported to the wrong places.  It needs a little extra texturing, but a good place to start.

  • Spring Fling

Well, today starts Spring Fling, the first major party of the year.  Lots of music, lots of food, lots of friends, lots of fun.  Been working on cleaning the pool from winter state (neglect).  More details as they happen, and I can recover.

    .

I was drawn back to the house by the aftermath of a dog fight.  Seems an emaciated stray wandered onto the property and encountered the two resident dogs, and didn’t take to them kindly.  In the end, it was a weaker dog and lost the fight with an injured back, but not without inflicting lots of bites.  Animal control out of Austin picked up the straydog.  Not the best way to start a party.

    .

Also managed a few splashy renders in modo as I recover from three weeks of a viral infection.  I am so glad that it is behind me.

  • Three week gap

Been a busy month, and an eventful one.  My sister passed away on January 12th.  Lots of financial issues rising after a tough couple of months, and had to deal with a couple of curves.  Fortunately, I’m getting some support, and some payment for work to handle the needs.  So all has been covered, though there was a certain amount of jumping through hoops.

    .

Also played some music at several places.  And I listened to some live music that was most impressive.

    .

Life rolls on with lots and lots of details.

  • 2010 – a start

Ugh, the party was just too much fun last night.  I ended up playing music with five or eight people for most of the PM, and I bowed out from the lead at 11:30.  After that, there was plenty more fine music.  Food was great.  Wonderful way to ring in a new decade.

    .

Not moving real quickly this morning, but neither are any of the other partiers, from the reports I heard.  Heading back to the site with makings for French Toast to continue the good times.

    .

Did a couple of renderings before the end of the year.  Showroom and installed.

  • Shaking down Poser 8, playing in modo, and generally relaxing until the first of the year.  A little Illustrator, moved all Poser downloads from solstice to my download page, tidying up the hard drives after the big download, put up PoserD again, stuff like that.  Staying busy and being lazy at the same time.

First render from Poser 8.  Base shakedown, nothing new yet.

Nothing noteworthy, just the sort of testing new stuff gets on a daily basis.  I always enjoy a good piece of 3D, and sometimes a bad one.

  • Rolling again

Heading east tomorrow morning.  Purpose: accumulating cash for paying bills.  The rain is past and blue skies prevail and should for a week.

    .

Just a little indication of what has been happening here in my spare time.  (I guess you can say I’m catching the Halloween spirit as it draws neigh.)

  • Moonlit clouds

I am facing a rather serious challenge, to achieve the effect of light fluffy popcorn clouds backlit by the moon.  modo seems the most likely candidate at this point.  It’s not going to be easy.

    .

At this point, I’m thinking a spotlight with a tight cone and loose fall off, working in a tightly defined volumetric layer, with shader filtration to form the clouds.  Fun, fun, fun……

  • Multi-tasking

Today was a truly multi-tasking day.  One of those tasks was this.  Note the shag carpet, another product of modo 4 hair.

  • Arf arf…… pant pant…… arf arf

Use of Fur Parametric Length Gradient to define hair shading, light at the skin to match, dark at the tip.

  • More modo hair

A fat cat…..  I think I’ve gotten the hair shader down pat now (well, 90% or better).

  • Bunny adjusted

Here’s a couple of dozen changes to reduce the shadow effects of the fur.  Results, a clean bun-bun.

    bunny2

  • Bunny

A toon bunny, with hair.  I’m having a little trouble repressing the hair shadows, so that the fuzziness doesn’t come out quite so dark.  I think I need to separate the fur and body color shaders and apply more ambient color to the fur.

  • More Nursoda

Added a few new Nursoda characters to the collection.  Bong, Bonga, and Kena.  They join Loik, Theo, Kelm and Kali, Kalinka, Koit, Zlata, and Telka.  I almost got Mo, but I’ll wait.  I need another TB of hard drive first.  I really enjoy his figures.

Tomorrow is my last full day here.  I should be rolling Wednesday.

  • modo 4 hair

    ducky

modo ( http://www/luxology.com/ ) has introduced hair into its latest release, 4.0.1, and I’m in the process of shaking down the upgrade.  modo is my primary focus in 3D these days (last couple of years), and the rare major upgrades usually get my primary attention.  And I am finding a lot of new stuff to shake down.

    .

While there are a number of new items in modeling, most of the new features deal with the new rendering engine.  Hair, shadow catching, volumetric lighting, caustics, replication, animation advances, IK, are a few of new features that need my attention in the next few weeks.  There are modeling advances as well, such as advanced snap to tools, which will simplify the making of clothing for models.

    .

So expect a lot of shakedown images, first encounters with new tools.  And when I say new tools, I mean new to the modo studio.  Many of these features I’ve handled in other studios, but modo has its own state of the art GUI, and its controls are new, so diving in I am.

    .

And like Rubber Ducky, I am awfully fond of modo.
